How to connect your own domain name to your FirstGen website.
Point a domain you own at your FirstGen site, step by step. Your dashboard shows the exact records to add.
Before you start
Connecting a domain is included. You need a domain you already own (like yourbusiness.com) and the login for the company you bought it from, where its DNS is managed (GoDaddy, Namecheap and so on).
Don't have a domain yet? Email support@firstgen.dev and we'll help you get one. Your site keeps working at {name}.firstgen.site either way.
Step by step
In your dashboard, open Connect domain.
Type your domain, like yourbusiness.com, and press Connect. Leave off https:// and www; we add www for you.
Your dashboard shows the DNS records to add. Copy them exactly.
Sign in where you manage your domain's DNS and add each record.
Leave the dashboard page open. It checks every 20 seconds and changes to "Connected and working" once the records are live.
DNS changes usually show up within an hour, and sometimes take longer. Your site gets its security certificate (the padlock) automatically once the domain points to us.
The DNS records
Your dashboard shows the exact values for your domain. Use those, not the examples here. The kinds of records you'll see:
Type | Name | What it does |
|---|---|---|
A | @ | Points your main domain (yourbusiness.com) to our hosting. The value is an IP address. |
CNAME | www | Points www.yourbusiness.com to our hosting. The value is a host name. |
TXT | shown in dashboard | Only sometimes: proves you own the domain, if it was used on another site before. |
What it looks like
Type Name Value
A @ <IP address from your dashboard>
CNAME www <host name from your dashboard>Connecting a subdomain instead (like site.yourbusiness.com)? You'll see one CNAME record for it, and nothing else.
If it isn't connecting
Delete any old A or CNAME records for @ or www that point somewhere else. Two records for the same name confuse browsers.
Don't touch your MX records. They run your email, and connecting your site doesn't need them.
Check for typos: the name field is just @ or www, not your full domain, at most DNS companies.
"That domain is already connected to another site" means it's on another FirstGen site. Email us and we'll sort it out.
Still waiting after a few hours? Email support@firstgen.dev with your domain and a screenshot of your DNS records.
