Mobile speed for local business websites

Mobile speed for local business websites

Why a slow site on a phone quietly loses you calls, how to test your own, and the usual causes you can fix.

Most people who look for a local service do it on a phone, often on mobile data and often in a hurry. If your site is slow to load or awkward to use on a small screen, a lot of them leave before they ever see your number.

Why it matters for a service business

A customer with a burst pipe or a broken air conditioner is not going to wait. They tap the first result, and if it shows a blank screen for several seconds, they go back and tap the next one. You never know they were there. Speed is not a technical nicety. It is part of answering the phone.

Google also looks at how pages perform for real visitors as one of many signals when it decides what to show, so a fast site helps on that side too.

How to test your own site

The simplest test is your own phone:

  • Turn off Wi-Fi so you are on mobile data.

  • Open your website from a Google search, as a customer would.

  • Count how long it takes until you can read the page and see your phone number.

  • Try to tap your number, open a service page and fill in your quote form.

For a more detailed check, Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool gives you a score and a list of issues for any page. Paste in your address and look at the mobile results.

What Google measures

PageSpeed Insights reports a set of measurements called Core Web Vitals. In plain words:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the main content, often the big image or headline, appears. Google considers 2.5 seconds or less good.

  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page responds when someone taps something. Google considers 200 milliseconds or less good.

  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much things jump around while the page loads, like a button moving just as you tap it. Google considers 0.1 or less good.

You do not need to memorise these. Just know that green is good and red needs attention.

Common causes of slow sites

  • Huge photos. A photo straight off a modern phone can be several megabytes. Websites should use resized, compressed versions.

  • Too many add-ons. Chat widgets, pop-ups, sliders, tracking scripts and fancy fonts all add weight.

  • Autoplay video. A background video on the home page looks nice on desktop Wi-Fi and painful on a phone.

  • Cheap or overloaded hosting. Some hosts are simply slow to respond.

  • Page builders that load everything everywhere. Some tools load code for every feature on every page.

Quick wins

  • Resize and compress photos before uploading, or use a platform that does it for you.

  • Remove plugins and widgets you do not need.

  • Replace autoplay video with a strong photo.

  • Keep the top of each page simple: headline, phone number, quote button, one image.

  • Make sure the site uses a secure connection, which is expected by browsers today.

Make it easy to use, not just fast

Speed is half of it. On a phone, the site also needs:

  • Text you can read without zooming.

  • Buttons big enough for a thumb, with space between them.

  • No pop-ups that cover the page as soon as it opens.

  • A phone number that starts a call when tapped.

Check again after changes

Every time you add a new feature, a new widget or a big batch of photos, test the site on your phone again. Speed tends to get worse slowly, one addition at a time.

The short version

Test your site on your own phone on mobile data. If it takes more than a few seconds to show your number, fix the photos, remove extras and keep the top of the page simple.
