Local SEO basics for service businesses

Local SEO basics for service businesses

Service pages, town pages and a consistent name, address and phone number: the foundations of showing up in local searches.

Local SEO sounds technical, but most of it comes down to making it obvious to Google what you do, where you do it, and that you are a real, established business.

SEO stands for search engine optimisation: making your website and listings easier for search engines to understand. For a local service business, the goal is to show up when people nearby search for the work you do. You do not need to learn the jargon. You need a few solid foundations.

Know what people search for

Think about the words your customers actually use. They search "carpet cleaning near me" less often than you might think, and "house cleaning Fishers" or "emergency plumber" more than you expect. Write down the services you offer and the towns you serve. Those two lists are the backbone of your local SEO.

One page per service

Give each main service its own page on your website. A page about "carpet cleaning" and a separate page about "upholstery cleaning" each have a better chance of showing up for those searches than one page that lists everything.

A good service page:

  • Says what the service is and who it is for.

  • Explains what is included and how the job works.

  • Mentions the area you serve.

  • Shows real photos and reviews related to that service if you have them.

  • Ends with your phone number and a way to request a quote.

Pages for the towns you serve

If you work across several towns, a page for each main town can help you show up when people search with that town's name. The key is making each page genuinely useful: which neighbourhoods you cover, the kind of jobs you do there, any local details that matter, such as older homes, hard water or large lots.

Avoid creating dozens of pages that are identical except for the town name. Google treats those as low quality, and customers can tell.

Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Your business name, address and phone number, often shortened to NAP, should be exactly the same everywhere they appear online: your website, your Google Business Profile, your social pages, and directories like Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps or the BBB.

Small differences can confuse search engines and customers:

  • "Smith Painting LLC" in one place and "Smith's Painters" in another.

  • An old phone number still listed on a directory.

  • An old address from before you moved.

Pick one exact version and use it everywhere. Once a year, search your business name and fix any old listings you find.

Your Google Business Profile

Your profile and your website work together. Make sure the services, service area, hours and phone number on your profile match your website. Link your profile to your website, and make sure that page loads fast and has your number at the top.

Reviews help too

Reviews are a sign to both customers and Google that you are a real, active business. Ask every happy customer for one, and reply to them. When reviewers naturally mention the service and town, such as "great job on our driveway in Noblesville", that helps people see you do that work in that area.

The technical basics

You do not need to be technical, but your site should have:

  • A secure connection (https, the padlock in the browser).

  • Fast loading on phones.

  • Clear page titles that include the service and town, such as "Lawn Care in Westfield, IN".

  • A sitemap submitted in Google Search Console so Google can find every page.

Be patient

Local SEO is not instant. New pages can take weeks to show up in search results, and rankings move gradually. Focus on getting the foundations right, keep your information accurate, keep collecting reviews, and check your progress in Search Console every month or so.

The short version

  • A page for each service.

  • A useful page for each main town you serve.

  • The same name, address and phone number everywhere.

  • A complete Google Business Profile that matches your site.

  • Steady reviews.

  • A fast, secure site, submitted to Search Console.
